Structured Wiring FAQ
 |
What is structured wiring?
Structured wiring combines all of the communications wiring in
your home and treats it as a single system that includes
telephone communications, computer and Internet services,
audio/video, and much more. Structured wiring consists of
three basic components:
-
A central hub where all cabling terminates
-
Individual specialized outlets located throughout your home
-
Specialized cables connecting each outlet directly to the
hub
The entire system is modular, so it can be custom-configured
for just the functions and features you want. With the
necessary cabling already installed behind the walls of your
new home, you can add other functions later without having
to go through a messy and expensive retrofit.

What are the advantages of structured wiring?
- Configurability - With all of the cables running back to the central hub, you can easily change how and what those individual cables are connected to and how they are used.
- Troubleshooting - Each of the cables can be isolated and easily tested when there are problems.
- No Splices - Splices are prone to failure and can pick up noise and interference.
- More Consistent Signal Quality - With all cables running back to the central hub, they can all be connected to the same source and get the same signal level.
- Expandability - New modules can be easily added to the central hub at a later time to add features to your existing system.
